Academic Information

BACHELOR OF GENERAL STUDIES DEGREE


The BGS is a complete degree program based in the traditional humanities, arts and sciences. It should not be confused with the General Studies Program, which is a required component in all degree programs.

  1. All general graduation requirements must be met.
  2. All UNK General Studies Program requirements must be met.
  3. A distribution requirement of 45 semester hours must be met, as per one of the following options:

    Option I: Student must complete at least 15 semester hours in three of the following five areas listed below:
    a. Fine Arts (Music, Dance, Art, Theatre)
    b. Humanities (English, Philosophy, Journalism, Speech)
    c. Foreign Language
    d. Social Science (Sociology, Psychology, Political Science, History,Cultural Geography, Economics)
    e. Natural Science (Math, Chemistry, Physics and Physical Science, Earth Science, Biology, Computer Science)

    Option II: Students must complete at least 30 semester hours in one of the following areas and 15 semester hours in another of the five areas listed below:

    a. Fine Arts (Music, Dance, Art, Theatre)
    b. Humanities (English, Philosophy, Journalism, Speech)
    c. Foreign Language
    d. Social Science (Sociology, Psychology, Political Science, History, Cultural Geography, Economics)
    e. Natural Science (Math, Chemistry, Physics and Physical Science, Earth Science, Biology, Computer Science)

  4. No more than a total of 6 semester hours may be used to meet both the General Studies and the Distribution requirements.
  5. At least 30 of the 45 distribution hours must be upper division courses with 300 or 400 numbering. At least 15 of these upper division hours must be UNK hours.
  6. Students must have at least a 2.5 GPA in the Distribution courses.
  7. All individual programs must be approved by the designated Bachelor of General Studies advisor. Contact Dr. Allen Jenkins, Director of General Studies.
