FACILITIES
There are 38 buildings on the 235 acre campus of UNK.
- William E. Bruner Hall of Science
Completed in August, 1966, this facility houses Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics/Statistics.
- Calvin T. Ryan Library
This building was erected in 1963. An addition in 1983 doubled the size of the facility.
The attached Mitchell Center includes radio and television broadcasting facilities.
- Copeland Hall
Built and used as the campus gymnasium from 1918 to 1961, this building was used for
offices and classes until 1995 when a classroom addition was built. The original building
was renovated in 1996 and now houses offices for the departments of Geography,
History, Psychology, and Sociology.
- Cushing Health, Physical Education and Recreation
Originally constructed in 1961, this facility has undergone extensive renovation. The
renovated building houses classrooms, offices, laboratories, locker facilities, an indoor
running track, racquetball, tennis, basketball and volleyball courts, weight area and
swimming pool. These facilities service recreation and intramural programs in addition to
space for the above listed academic programs and intercollegiate athletic teams.
- Education Center
Originally built as the Military Science building in 1969, this building now houses the
Dean of the College of Education and the departments of
Educational Administration, and Continuing Education and Expanded Campus.
- Facilities Building
This brick structure houses offices for the physical plant operations.
- Fine Arts Building
It houses the facilities for Music, and Speech
Communications/Theater Arts. It opened in January, 1970 and in 1979 a wing was added
to house the Department of Art.
- Founders Hall
Opened in 1977 and dedicated to the original faculty of UNK, this facility now serves as
the administrative hub of the University. Offices include the Chancellor and Vice
Chancellor Offices, Finance, Registrar, Human Resources, Business Services, Budget,
Institutional Data and Analysis and Graduate Offices on the first level. Second level
includes other administrative offices and faculty offices and classrooms for some
departments in the College of Education and College of Natural & Social Sciences.
- Health and Sports Center
Dedicated during the fall of 1990, this state-of-the-art facility houses indoor spectator
sports of UNK. In addition, offices, locker facilities, equipment rooms, athletic weight
area, athletic training facilities, wrestling and martial arts room are located in the
building. Concession and rest room facilities service spectators utilizing the 6000 seat
arena.
- Memorial Student Affairs Building
Constructed in 1956 and remodeled in 1964 and 1984, this building houses Admissions,
Campus Post Office, Public Safety, Career
Planning and Placement Center, Counseling and Advising Center, Financial Aid, UNK Foundation, and Student Health.
- The Museum of Nebraska Art
Located in downtown Kearney, the historic old post office became the home of the Nebraska
Art Collection in October of 1986. The collection shows the cultural heritage and current
status of art in Nebraska. Extensive remodeling and expansion of the building, including
the development of a park was completed in 1994.
- The Nebraskan Student Union
This building was completed in 1964. A 1983 addition included a ballroom, snack bar, TV
and game rooms, music and study rooms, bookstore, deli, sweet shops and private dining
areas. The building was renovated in 1995.
- Ockinga Seminar Center
Constructed adjacent to the Business Office Building as a gift from the Clara Ockinga
estate.
- Otto Olsen
Built in 1957, this structure houses Family and Consumer Science,
Industrial Technology, and Computer
Science, as well as Computer Services.
- Residence Halls
UNK has twelve residence halls and University Heights apartments to accommodate students
residing on campus. They are described fully in the Student Affairs section under the
heading Housing Facilities.
- A.O. Thomas
A campus school from 1926-1963, it now houses the departments of English,
Modern Languages, Journalism and Mass
Communications and Philosophy.
- Welch
This facility was part of the 1972 State Tubercular Hospital complex acquisition. In 1989
the building, which houses business department offices, was named the Roland B. Welch Hall
in honor of a long-time business professor.
- West Center
In 1972 UNK acquired the former State Tubercular Hospital complex. It is used for the
Departments of Business (Accounting/Finance, Business Administration/Business Education, and Management/Marketing), Economics,
Nursing, Special Education/Communication Disorders, Social Work, Vocational Education,
the Safety Center and the Sculpture Annex.
- Communications Center Building
Part of the former State Tubercular Hospital complex acquired in 1972, it is used by
Publication Services, Campus Printing Services and the News Bureau. In 1995 a small
addition was built and renovations took place to add the Rural Health Education
Network/Distance Learning Center.
