Department Objectives:
- To provide education in the field of mild/moderate disabilities. This program provides the necessary competencies to become endorsed as either an elementary or secondary resource teacher working with children with mild/moderate disabilities (learning disabilities, mental retardation, behavior disabilities);
- To provide education in the subject area of early childhood special education. This program provides the necessary sequence of courses to become endorsed as a teacher of early childhood special education (0-5 years);
- To provide education in the field of communication disorders. This program provides the necessary sequence of courses to obtain licensure and/or become endorsed as a speech/language pathologist upon completion of a Master's Degree;
- To offer a minor;
- To provide courses for educators outside the field of special education to develop competency in recognizing and serving children disabilities.
Information for Students Seeking Teaching Endorsements
Students desiring to major in Special Education must complete the coursework for any two of the following subject endorsements: elementary (K-6) mild/moderate disabilities; secondary (7-12) mild/moderate disabilities; or early childhood special education (0-5 years).
Upon admission to teacher education, candidates requesting a special education or communication disorders major, supplemental endorsement, or minor in special education or communication disorders should file a program with the Special Education/ Communication Disorders Department for approval. Requirements for admission to student teaching in the endorsed areas are consistent with those recommended by the College of Education.
SPECIAL EDUCATION MAJOR
Four options are available in this major:
- I. Mild/Moderate Disabilities Option Teaching Field Endorsement K-12 - Bachelor of Arts in Education Degree
II.Mild/Moderate Disabilities Option with Teaching Subject Endorsement K-6 - Bachelor of Arts in Education Degree
III. Mild/Moderate Disabilities Option with Teaching Subject Endorsement 7-12 - Bachelor of Arts in Education Degree
IV. Early Childhood Special Education Option with Subject Teaching Endorsement - Bachelor of Arts in Education Degree
A minor in Special Education is available in the department.
COMMUNICATION DISORDERS MAJOR
One option is available in this major:
- Communications Disorders Teaching Subject Endorsement - Bachelor of Science in Education Degree
A minor in Communication Disorders is available.
Courses with the prefixes CDIS and SPED are offered by the department.
The Speech, Language, and Hearing Clinic
Professional preparation in speech/language pathology requires clinical experience with children and adults who have been referred to the clinic for speech/language and hearing assessment and/or treatment. This program provides an opportunity to study, in a practical setting, the application of skills and techniques learned in the academic program. The clinic provides an integral part of the initial educational program in speech/language pathology.
