Mission:
Adopted in part from the statement of the American Home Economics Association: The mission of Family
and Consumer Sciences is to enable families, both as individual units and generally as a social institution
to build and maintain systems of action which lead (1) to maturing in individual self formation, (2) to
encourage enlightened, cooperative participation in the critique and formation of social goals and means
of accomplishing them; and (3) to enable individuals to be critically aware of consumer resources and
their management as well as to develop the competence to base actions upon rational, responsible decisions.
Department Objectives
- Human Development and Family Relationships: To present opportunities to identify universal principles governing development in the family, encounter and analyze a variety of theories, and studying the complex but integrated life-styles and family structures which evolve over the life span.
- Clothing, Apparel and Textiles: To prepare students for a professional career in the apparel industries. Emphasis will be placed on production, pricing, promotion and distribution throughout the soft-goods chain (textile producer, apparel manufacturer and retailer).
- Foods and Nutrition: To educate students for a profession responsible for the nutritional care of individuals and groups. Includes preparation for becoming a member of the American Dietetic Association or for professional careers in the food service industry.
- Consumer Services, Education and Management: To provide students with a more global view of economics and management, while enhancing the interaction between themselves and their environment.
- Interior Design: To provide students with a background in the physiological, sociological and economic aspects of housing and in the selection of housing, interior design, furnishings and equipment and to prepare students for the occupation of Kitchen Design as a certified Kitchen Designer.
- Family and Consumer Sciences Education: To prepare students for certification for teaching in the family and consumer sciences at the secondary level. They may elect to focus on family life, foods and nutrition or take a general perspective. The occupational family and consumer sciences teaching endorsement is an option.
Department Policy
All students completing a major or minor in the department will be required to earn a "C" or
better grade in all courses in the major or minor.
FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCES MAJOR
Three options are available in this major:
- I. Family and Consumer Sciences in Business Comprehensive Option
- Apparel Marketing Emphasis
Food Service Management Emphasis
Geriatric Care Management Emphasis
Interior Design Emphasis
II. Human Development and Family Relationships Option - Bachelor of Science Degree
III. Family and Consumer Sciences Education -Teaching Field Endorsement - Bachelor of Science in Education
An endorsement in Occupational Family and Consumer Sciences is offered in
conjunction with the Teaching Field Endorsement.
Minors in Family and Consumer Sciences are:

2. Human Development and Family Relationships minor
