History-Social Science Major

Four major options are available:

I. History Option - Bachelor of Arts Degree
II. History-Social Science Comprehensive Option - Bachelor of Science Degree

III. History Teaching Subject Endorsement Option - Bachelor of Arts in Education Degree

A minor in History is available for students pursuing majors in other disciplines. Elementary Education majors may also minor in Social Science.


I.History Option - Bachelor of Arts Degree

A. General Studies Program - 45 hours
B. Foreign Language (2 intermediate or upper level courses required) 5-14 hours
C. History Major (courses listed below) - 36 hours
D. One minor or major other than History - 24 hours
E. Electives to total - 125 hours

Advanced U.S. History - 9
Advanced European History - 9
Advanced Non-Western History - 6
At least 9 hours of the advanced history hours must be 400 level classes.
Non-Western History classes include: HIST 316, 317, 339, 340, 350, 418, 419, 450. HIST 402, 457, and 486 may be counted as advanced European or advanced Non-Western history.

II. History-Social Science Comprehensive Option - Bachelor of Science Degree

A. General Studies Program - 45 hours
B. Social Science Major with an Emphasis in History (courses listed below) - 60 hours
C. Electives to total - 125 hours

HIST 210GS Western Civilization - 3
HIST 211GS Western Civilization - 3
HIST 250GS American History - 3
HIST 251GS American History - 3
CSIS 108GS Computers in Society - 3
History Electives - Advanced U.S. History - 6
Advanced European History - 6
Advanced Non-Western History - 6
At least 6 hours of advanced history hours must be 400 level classes.
Non-Western History classes include: HIST 316, 317, 339, 340, 350, 418, 419, 450.
HIST 402, 457, and 486 may be counted as advanced European or advanced Non-Western history.

Social Science - 27 hours
From Economics, Geography, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology the student will complete 15 hours in one social science and at least 3 hours in each of the remaining Social Sciences.

III. History Teaching Subject Endorsement Option (7-12) - Bachelor of Arts in Education Degree

A. General Studies Program - 45 hours
B. Professional Sequence in Education - 25 hours
C. History Subject Endorsement (courses listed below) - 39 hours
D. One Subject Endorsement other than History - 30-39 hours
E. Electives to total - 125 hours
HIST 250GS, 251GS;
6 hours from HIST 210GS, 211GS, 212GS, 215GS; (3 hours from HIST 210GS or HIST 211GS required);
Advanced U.S. History - 9
Advanced non-U.S. History - 9
(at least 3 hours must be from Non-Western World History courses.)
(At least 9 hours of the advanced history hours must be at the 400 level.)
SOSC 370.
Six hours from GEOG 104GS, GEOG 106GS, SOC 250GS, or PSCI 268GS (3 hours required in Geography).
Non-Western World History classes include HIST 316, 317, 339, 340, 350, 418, 419, 450.
HIST 402, 457, and 486 may be counted as advanced European or advanced Non-Western history.

IV. History-Social Science Teaching Field Endorsement Option 7-12 - Bachelor of Arts in Education Degree

A. General Studies Program - 45 hours
B. Professional Sequence in Education - 25 hours
C. Social Science Field Endorsement (courses listed below) - 63 hours
D. Electives to total - 125 hours

The following departments are included in the Social Sciences: Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology.

General Requirements - 30 hours
HIST 250GS, 251GS;
6 hours from HIST 210GS, 211GS, 212GS, 215GS (3 hours required from HIST 210GS or 211GS);
6 hours advanced U.S. History;
6 hours advanced non-U.S. History (at least 6 hours of the advanced history classes must be taken at the 400 level.)
SOC 250GS - Anthropology; SOSC 370 - Social Science of the High School.

Second Area of Emphasis - 12 hours
12 hours from one of the following options:
Economics - ECON 270GS, 271GS;
6 advanced hours in Economics
Geography - GEOG 105GS; 104GS or 106GS;
5 additional hours including at least one course from 340 to 349
Political Science - PSCI 100GS, 110GS, 361, and either 268GS or 370.
Psychology - PSY 190GS, 203GS; and 6 advanced hours in Psychology
Sociology - SOC 224GS, 440; 6 advanced hours in Sociology

Other Requirements - 21 hours
21 hours from the four remaining Social Sciences
(excluding History and the second area of emphasis.)
A. At least 3 hours from each of the remaining Social Sciences
B. 9 hours of electives from the remaining Social Sciences

Minors

Twelve hours from Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, Sociology, GEOG 343 and/or HIST 479 and/or HIST 405 and/or HIST 481 or 482 are recommended for those planning to teach in the fourth through eighth grades.
