Department Objectives

To develop a language proficiency of value in business, industry and travel;

To give students a better understanding of the peoples of our narrowing world scene;

To provide students with the basic language requirements needed for research in later graduate and professional degrees.

To provide training in the specialized area of translation-interpretation.

Retroactive Credit Policy:

This policy ends in 1997 with implementation of new UN admission standards.

The Department of Foreign Languages will allow credit via a "confirming" course for French/German/Spanish 100-101-200-201 subject to the following conditions:

a) The confirming course must be the first university-level course completed in the language and must be taken at UNK;

b) Confirming course numbers are 101, 200, 201 or a 300-400 level course (excluding phonetics) in French, German or Spanish at UNK.

c) The student must receive a letter grade of "C" or better in the confirming course and may not repeat the course for the purpose of requesting credits under this policy;

d) A maximum of 16 credits may be granted in any one language for previous high school or non-college level work at a level lower than the confirming course.
Retroactive Course ---------------------- Credits -- Credits
Beginning Language I (100)-------------------5
Beginning Language II (101) -----------------5---------5
Intermediate Language I (200)---------------10---------3
Intermediate Language II (201)--------------13---------3

After the successful completion of the confirming course students must report to the Chair of the Department of Foreign Languages (Thomas Hall, Room 215) with a copy of their grade report form. Normally, this must be done within four weeks of the Registrar's mailing the grade report form.

This policy ends in 1997 with implementation of new UN admission standards.
