DEGREE PROGRAMS

Undergraduate Degrees
For Graduate Degrees, see the Graduate Catalog.

The University of Nebraska at Kearney is authorized to confer the following baccalaureate degrees:

The degrees in education are designed to prepare the student for entry into the profession of teaching.

REQUIREMENTS FOR DEGREES AND PRE-PROFESSIONAL WORK

  1. Application for a degree must be made at the Office of the Registrar.
  2. There will no longer be a summer commencement ceremony. However, students who complete all degree requirements during the summer session, may apply to receive their degrees at the conclusion of the summer term. The application form and $20 fee must be submitted by June 1 5. The date of graduation will be posted as the Friday following the end of the summer term. Summer graduates may then participate in a subsequent fall or spring commencement ceremony if they so desire.
  3. Students must have all degree requirements completed prior to participating in the fall or spring commencement ceremony. Students who will complete their coursework during the summer term are NOT eligible to participate in the preceding spring ceremony.
  4. A student planning to be graduated at the end of the first semester must make application no later than September 15; one planning to be graduated at the end of the second semester must make application no later than February 1; and one planning to be graduated at the end of the summer session must make application no later than June 15.
  5. Students applying on or before the above deadlines will be assessed a $20 application fee. Applications received after the above dates and until October 7 for fall commencement, February 15 for Spring commencement and June 30 for summer will be assessed a $30 application fee. Students wishing to apply for candidacy after the second deadline must appeal to a review board consisting of the Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and the College Dean.
  6. All incomplete and all academic obligations outside of the term's work must be resolved thirty days prior to the date of graduation or other arrangements must be approved by the Registrar's Office to allow the student to continue with the graduation process. A student must be enrolled in all remaining course work required for the degree in order to be considered for candidacy. If all degree requirements are not completed by the anticipated commencement date, then the student must re-apply and again pay the $20 fee in order to receive a diploma. The catalog in effect at the time of initial enrollment determines degree requirements. Students must fulfill the requirements stated in that catalog or they may elect to substitute the requirements in any subsequent catalog published while they are enrolled at UNK. A student must, however, meet the requirements from one catalog only rather than choosing a portion from one catalog and the remainder from another.
  7. If a student takes longer than five calendar years to complete a degree, UNK reserves the right to require the student to meet the most recent requirements for graduation. Curriculum changes or modifications require that all new program requirements be met regardless of course work previously completed.
  8. A minimum total of 125 semester hours must be earned, of which 40 hours must be in 300 or 400 (Junior/Senior) level courses. Such courses must be taken at a four-year college or university. Courses with numbers lower than 100 will not count toward degrees.
  9. All General Studies requirements as outlined in this section must be met.
  10. A minimum of 32 semester hours applicable to the selected degree program must be earned through UNK.
  11. Correspondence study applicable to any undergraduate degree is limited to a maximum of 12 semester hours, regardless of source or institution awarding the correspondence course credit.
  12. All degree requirements of their major and minor departments must be completed by degree candidates.
  13. Graduation is dependent upon a minimum grade point average (G.P.A.) of 2.0 "C" considering all courses taken at University of Nebraska. This minimum G.P.A. must also be earned in all courses needed to fulfill competency requirements within a comprehensive major, or within the major and minor programs of study, or within the endorsement areas in teacher education programs. Individual departments, however, may require a grade of at least a "C" for courses in their majors.
  14. Since all degrees at UNK require at least one mathematics course, it is strongly recommended students start taking their mathematics courses no later than their second semester of their freshman year.
