Social and Behavioral Sciences - 12 hours
The Social Work Program highly recommends ECON 100GS, PSCI 100GS, PSY 203GS, and SOC 200GS.

When students have met the requirements from the above lists, they may enroll for electives reflecting their interests. The program recommends that their electives contain material on racial, minority and women's issues, rural concerns, families, anthropology, child welfare, and social problems in general.

Liberal arts courses will be taken in the following order with Social Work courses:
Concurrently with SOWK 170, Introduction to Social Welfare
BIOL 103GS
ENG 101GS
SPCH 100GS
PSY 203GS
These courses improve communications skills, and provide biological and psychological information to prepare the students for SOWK 185 Human Behavior in the Social Environment.
PSY 230GS
ENG 102 or FORLGS
PHIL 100GS
SOC 200GS
These courses continue the student's preparation to effectively communicate, think logically as will as abstractly, and to recognize and understand the individual's interaction with groups and the systems of social environment.
As a basis for SOWK 276, Social Welfare Policies & Services, the following courses should be taken:
ECON 100GS
PSCI 100GS
HIST 251GS (American)
SOC 225
STAT 235
These courses provide foundation knowledge for understanding the political, economic, historical, culturally diverse, and research aspects of policy-making, funding, and the provision of services.
Concurrently with SOWK 276, Social Welfare Policies and Services, and preparatory to SOWK 371, Practice I.
Physical Science course
ENG 250GS, or ENG 251GS, or ENG 252GS, etc.
SOC 337

The student chooses a physical science, a literature course, and SOC 337, Sociological Inquiry for research content. These courses provide additional liberal arts background for understanding the human and his/her place in the world together with problem-solving/advocacy efforts on their behalf.

Additional liberal arts content is obtained in the student's choice of a fine arts course, free electives, as well as from Category "B" and Category "C".

It is expected that students will integrate liberal arts as well as social work content throughout their studies of the curriculum and in particular, during the integration of theory and practice in the field courses SOWK 480 and SOWK 481.
