100GS. Introduction to Music - 3 hours
Surveys music in its basic aspects. No music background required for enrollment.
102GS. American Music: Jazz and Rock - 3 hours
Surveys jazz and rock music through readings and recordings, from both a musical and cultural vantage point, to gain an appreciation of these indigenous American musical forms.
103. University Band - 1 hour
Open to all university students with high school band experience. Concerts, tours, marching.
110. Brass Techniques - 1 hour
Class instruction designed to meet the needs of those who will teach music in the public schools.
112. Flute/Double Reed Techniques - 1 hour
Class instruction designed to meet the needs of those who will teach music in the public schools.
113. Clarinet/Saxophone Techniques - 1 hour
Class instruction designed to meet the needs of those who will teach music in the public schools.
114. Percussion Techniques - 1 hour
Class instruction designed to meet the needs of those who will teach music in the public schools.
115. Public School Music I - 2 hours
Basic skills for the elementary classroom teacher. Requirements may be met by proficiency examination.
118. Guitar Techniques - 1 hour
Class instruction designed to meet the needs of those who will teach music in the public schools. Intended for the beginning guitarist. Students must provide their own instruments.
120. String Techniques - 1 hour
Elementary class instruction designed for prospective instrumental music teachers.
130. Voice Techniques - 1 hour
Fundamentals of singing, interpretation, and solo repertoire. For beginning voice students with a major or minor in music.
150. Private Instruction - 1 hour
Prerequisite: University level competency as determined by audition. Piano, organ, voice, stringed instruments, wind instruments, or percussion. Students may register as many times as desired, but may not receive more than two hours of credit in any one term. At least five hours of practice per week are required for one hour of credit. Lessons are one-half hour in length for one hour of credit. . All students enrolled in MUS 150 are required to attend ten recitals and/or concerts each semester. A jury examination is usually required at the end of each semester. Consult with instructor before registering. A private lesson fee will be assessed.
159. Piano Fundamentals - 1 hour
Fundamentals of music as applied to the keyboard. Designed for students with little or no previous musical training. Note and rhythm reading on the keyboard will be emphasized. Credit may not be applied to a music major or minor.
160. Piano Techniques I - 1 hour
Prerequisite: Ability to read musical notation. The first course in keyboard fundamentals, designed for students with little or no keyboard background.
161. Piano Techniques II - 1 hour
Prerequisite: MUS 160 or equivalent. Continuation of keyboard fundamentals with particular emphasis on harmonization, transposition, sight reading, and building facility at the keyboard.
162. Piano Techniques III - 1 hour
Prerequisite: MUS 161 or equivalent. Continuation of keyboard fundamentals, designed to prepare music majors and minors for the required piano proficiency examination.
165. Small Ensembles - 1 hour
Instrumental, vocal and keyboard ensembles. Consult with instructor before registering. Students may register as many times as desired, but may not receive more than two hours of credit in any one term.
166. Accompanying - 1-3 hours
Prerequisite: Permission of instructor. The art of accompanying vocal and instrumental literature. Practical experience accompanying students during lessons and public performance. Approximately six hours of accompanying per week, either in rehearsal with soloist or in attendance at their lessons, will be required for each hour of credit. May be repeated for additional credit.
168. Piano Repertoire and Ensemble - 1 hour
Designed to acquaint students with piano literature and to provide opportunity for piano ensemble participation. Performance, evaluation of literature and performance, selection of piano literature and methods. Two hours of cumulative credit may be earned.
175. University Chorus - 1 hour
Open to all UNK students. Placement by audition.
177. Opera Workshop - 1-3 hours
An activity course in all phases of Opera, Operetta, and Musical Theatre production including the singing actor, pit ensemble, stage movement, stage crafts, and musical direction.
198. Sight Singing and Ear Training I - 1 hour
Sight reading of standard music materials; melodic, rhythmic and harmonic dictation. Should be taken concurrently with MUS 200.
199. Sight Singing and Ear Training II - 1 hour
Prerequisite: MUS 198. Sight reading of standard music materials; melodic, rhythmic and harmonic dictation. Should be taken concurrently with MUS 201.
200. Theory I - 3 hours
Rudiments of music, including melodic and rhythmic notation, scales, key signatures, intervals, and chord structure. Elementary harmonic analysis, with non-harmonic tones. Should be taken concurrently with MUS 199.
201. Theory II - 3 hours
Prerequisite: MUS 200. Continuation of melodic and harmonic analysis. Harmonization of chorales and other melodies, using diatonic triads, dominant and leading tone seventh chords, and modulation. Should be taken concurrently with MUS 199.
215. Public School Music II - 2 hours
Prerequisite: MUS 115. Methods and materials for the elementary classroom teacher.
220. Kearney Area Symphony Orchestra - 1 hour
Open to all who qualify; consult instructor when registering. Noncredit participation is also allowed; non-university musicians from Kearney and surrounding communities are welcome. Concerts, operas, musicals, joint choir-orchestra performances.
260. Keyboard Harmonization - 1 hour
Prerequisite: Competent keyboard facility and permission of the instructor. A one-semester course for students with keyboard facility, designed to satisfy piano proficiency requirements for majors and minors. Keyboard harmonization, transposition, improvisation, score reading, and sight reading.
301. Music Synthesis - 3 hours
Prerequisite: MUS 201. An introduction to the field of electronic music instruments. The course provides a basic understanding of analog and digital synthesizers, sequencers, rhythm programmers, and MIDI. One hour of laboratory each week is required.
305. Conducting I - 2 hours
Prerequisites: MUS 103, 175 or 220. The technique of the baton, interpretation, score reading and rehearsal.
310. Music Business - 3 hours
Surveys the business aspects of the entire music industry emphasizing recording, merchandising, managing, broadcasting, promoting, licensing, and copyrights. Includes information on career planning and development.
314. Piano Pedagogy I - 3 hours
An introduction to the techniques of teaching piano, with emphasis on pre-college levels. The course deals with teaching philosophies, teaching methods, establishing an independent studio, and lesson planning. Observations of local teachers and some supervised teaching will comprise the two hours of laboratory per week.
337. Sight Singing and Ear Training III - 1 hour
Prerequisite: MUS 199. Sight reading of standard music materials including chromaticism. Ear training of melodic, rhythmic and harmonic materials. Should be taken concurrently with MUS 339.
338. Sight Singing and Ear Training IV - 1 hour
Prerequisite: MUS 337. Sight reading of standard music materials including chromaticism. Ear training of melodic, rhythmic and harmonic materials. Should be taken concurrently with MUS 340.
339. Theory III - 3 hours
Prerequisite: MUS 201. An intensive study of diatonic and chromatic harmonic structures and processes. Harmonic analysis of music for various performance media taken mostly from the Romantic period. Should be taken concurrently with MUS 337.
340. Theory IV - 3 hours
Prerequisite: MUS 339. Continuation of Theory III. Introduction to late 16th Century and 18th Century Counterpoint. Introduction to the expansion of harmonic resources from the period of Impressionism to the present. Should be taken concurrently with MUS 338.
341. Counterpoint - 2 hours
Prerequisite: MUS 201. Study of contrapuntal writing in 18th century style.
350. Advanced Private Instruction - 2 hours
Prerequisite: Two semesters of MUS 150 and permission of the instructor and the department chairman. Designed for Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in music performance majors. At least ten hours of practice per week are required. Lessons are one hour in length. All students enrolled in MUS 350 are required to attend ten recitals and/or concerts. A jury examination is usually required at the end of each semester. A private lesson fee will be assessed.
357. Elementary/Junior High General Music - 3 hours
Prerequisite: MUS 200. Methods and materials for the music specialists, grades 1 through 9.
365. Form and Analysis - 2 hours
Prerequisite: MUS 339. Study of the architecture of music. Analysis of harmonic, melodic, rhythmic and formal elements in the works of representative composers.
406/806. Advanced Instrumental Conducting & Literature - 2 hours
Prerequisite: MUS 305.
407/807. Advanced Choral Conducting and Literature - 2 hours
Prerequisite: MUS 305.
425. Arranging - 2 hours
Prerequisite: MUS 339. Comprehensive study of scoring for band, choir and orchestra.
447. Music History and Literature I - 3 hours
The historical background and literature of music through the 18th century.
448. Music History and Literature II - 3 hours
The historical background and literature of music from the 19th century to the present.
460/860. Independent Study and Research - 1-4 hours
Prerequisite: Permission of instructor. Independent research or special assignment to the student's major field. Six hours of cumulative credit may be earned.
468. Secondary School Music - 3 hours
Consideration of problems relating to preparation for student teaching. Emphasis will be given to music for the exceptional child, use of fretted instruments in the classroom, direction of swing/show choirs, and directing school musicals.
474. Music Business Project - 1 hour
Prerequisites: MUS 301 and 310. Independent investigation of a career in music business and additional research in the area of the student's specialization under the supervision of the music business program director. Requires a written report.
475. Internship in Music Business - 9-15 hours
A practical work experience in one of the business areas of the music industry. Students choose participating firms and work as if full-time employees. Enrollees must have completed all other requirements in the degree program with a GPA of 2.2 or better. Permission of instructor required before enrollment. Grades in this class will be recorded as credit/no credit.
485/885. Seminar in Opera Technique and Performance - 3 hours
A study of available operas with regard to casting, rehearsal techniques, staging, management, and performance. An opera will be selected, rehearsed and performed as the culmination of the course.
488. Recital - 1 hour
Prerequisite: Junior standing and permission of instructor. Required of all candidates for the B.F.A. degree with a music performance major.
499. Music Special Topics - 1-3 hours
Topics are studied which are not assigned or covered in other courses in the department. The format of this course will vary depending on the topic, instructor, and the needs of the student.

Courses (DANC)

122GS. Dance Appreciation - 3 hours
Nonperformance course. Survey of dance as an art form from primitive dance through the ages of ballet, modern dance, and jazz; the media; methods of recording dance; hazards of the profession; problems of dance today. Lectures and discussions on anatomy, body alignment, and dance as art for the lay dance community.
138. Modern Dance Techniques I( Fine Arts) - 2 hours
For the student with little or no experience in dance. Basic principles: fundamentals of movement, proper alignment, flexibility, and rhythmic accuracy. Introduction to ballet and modern dance vocabulary with concentration on basic motor skills, skips hops, triplets, prances, leaps and variations to develop coordination.
139. Modern Dance Technique II (Fine Arts) - 2 hours
Prerequisite: DANC 138 or permission of instructor. A continuation of DANC138 with continued emphasis on flexibility and strength while attempting more difficult dance combinations.
148. Jazz Dance I - 1 hour
A course for the student with little or no experience in dance. Course consists of understanding rhythm, musicality, and style. Course also includes exercises developing isolation of body movement and body strength. A concurrent enrollment in DANC 138 is strongly recommended.
149. Jazz Dance II - 1 hour
Prerequisite: DANC 148 or permission of instructor. A continuation of DANC 148 with further emphasis on strength and style. The student learns short movement phrases and begins to build these into longer movement patterns.
236. Tap Dance - 1 hour
Prerequisite: permission of instructor. This course will explore the basic principles of tap dance technique incorporating a wide range of music and specific vocabulary such as shuffleball-change, toe-hop-step, riffs, cramprolls, and wings. Tap shoes required.
238. Modern Dance Technique III (Fine Arts) - 2 hours
Prerequisites: DANC 138, 139, or permission of instructor. A course for students who have had previous training in dance. The course covers the basic technical skills of modern dance and concentrates on developing flexibility, strength, and locomotor patterns. Students experience longer movement combinations dealing with support and balance which will alert them to the kinesthetic awareness of the body.
239. Modern Dance Technique IV (Fine Arts) - 2 hours
Prerequisite: DANC 238 or permission of instructor. A continuation of DANC 238 with further emphasis on strength and sustaining balance through longer, more involved combinations.
248. Jazz Dance III - 1 hour
Prerequisite: DANC 149 or permission of instructor. A continuation of DANC149 with emphasis on rhythmic performance while building technique and style through advanced combinations.
249. Jazz Dance IV - 1 hour
Prerequisite: DANC 248 or permission of instructor. A continuation of DANC 248 with emphasis on rhythmic performance while building technique and style through advanced combinations.
341. Creative Projects in Dance - 1-3 hours
Prerequisite: permission of instructor. Designed for the student minoring in Dance who wishes to do specific creative work (rather than research) in the areas of dance composition, performance, and technical design or production.
342. Dance Production - 3 hours
Prerequisite: permission of instructor. Involves the practical application of technical theatre and management skills to the specific needs of dance. Students will be required to do technical work for the spring Dance Concert and/or informal workshops.
344. Basic Dance Composition - 3 hours
Prerequisite: DANC 328 or permission of instructor. The basic principles of dance composition are explored through time, space, dynamics, weight, and movement invention for both solo and group forms.
348. Modern Dance Technique V (Fine Arts) - 2 hours
Prerequisite: permission of instructor. A course for the high intermediate/advanced dancer designed to improve technical skills with a strong emphasis on performance through complicated movement combinations through space.
349. Modern Dance Technique VI (Fine Arts) - 2 hours
Prerequisite: DANC 348 or permission of instructor. A continuation of DANC 348 with further emphasis on style, technical accuracy and performance quality.
401.1 Special Topics: Choreographing the Musical - 1-3 hours
Prerequisite: permission of instructor. Designed to assist the novice choreographer in learning and understanding the total aspect of a musical production. Specific attention is given to dance and its relation to music, set design, and plot.
460. Independent Study in Dance - 1-4 hours
Prerequisite: permission of instructor. Investigation of selected problems or topics on an individual basis. The student will discuss the proposal with the instructor and will meet with him on a bimonthly basis for consultation.
