100GS. Art Structure - 3 hours
Fundamental training in the basic art elements. Emphasis upon art materials and processes and the development of a basic art vocabulary. Recommended for non-art majors.
101. Drawing Fundamentals - 2 hours
Fundamental training in the elements of composition and drawing. Work in a variety of drawing media. Two hours consecutively.
108. Design - Basic Design and Color Theories - 3 hours
Study of basic art elements. Practical experience in art as applied to everyday life. Recommended for students wanting fundamental art training.
120GS. Art Appreciation - 3 hours
Development of major styles and periods in history of Western art. Significant examples of architecture, sculpture and painting are studied. Understanding of art as it relates to our own environment is stressed.
201. Drawing II - 2 hours
Prerequisite: ART 101. Reinforcement of concepts studied in Drawing I introduction of abstraction, color, and problems of visualization will be studied. Special Materials fee $5.00. Two hours consecutively.
204. Life Drawing - 2 hours
Prerequisite: ART 101, 102. Development of understanding of form through drawing from models in various media. Three hours consecutively. Special materials fee of $15.00.
211. Three-Dimensional Design - 3 hours
Open to freshmen. Fundamental problems in three-dimensional form. A creative use of materials and techniques is also stressed. Special materials fee of $30.00.
215. Oil and Acrylic Painting - 3 hours
Prerequisites: ART 101 and 108. Students experiment with painting techniques and are encouraged to develop individually in their work. The course may be taken for three semesters for a total credit of nine hours. Students registering the second time register for 215B, third time for 215C. Two hours consecutively. Special materials fee of $5.00.
216. Watercolor - 2 hours
Prerequisite: ART 101 or 108. Instruction in transparent and opaque techniques. Emphasis in originality and technique. The course may be taken for three semesters for a total credit of six hours. Students registering the second time register for 216B; the third time for 216C. Four hours of arranged laboratory time.
217. Introduction to Commercial Art - 3 hours
Course is a transition from the fine arts to the commercial arts and an introduction to basic commercial art materials, techniques and thinking. The student is involved in a variety of commercial art projects designed to teach a particular skill. Thumbnail sketches, neatness, creativity and quality presentation are stressed.
221. Art History Survey I - 3 hours
Introduction to basic concepts and styles in the history of Western art from prehistory to the Renaissance. The arts are related to their cultural context.
225. Sculpture - 3 hours
Prerequisite: ART 211. Sculpture problems in clay, plaster, cast stone, wood and metal are introduced. Two hours consecutively. Special materials fee of $40.00.
226. Non Western Survey I: Art in India, China and Japan - 3 hours
Survey of the artistic heritage of three major non-western traditions from approximately 1000 B.C. to the nineteenth century. Special emphasis will be placed on art as a reflection of the religious and cultural developments of each country and time period.
228. Creative Photography - 3 hours
Prerequisites: ART 101, 108. Instruction in the photographic medium, its background and meaning today in the art world. Introduction to the history of photography with emphasis on the contemporary creative approach today. Methods of use of the camera, film processing and enlarging. Emphasis on the creative process. Students must furnish camera, film and paper. Special materials fee of $25.00.
230. Ceramics - 3 hours
Prerequisite: ART 211. This course is intended to introduce the student to the materials, processes and techniques of studio ceramics. Additionally, the student is made aware of the historical as well as the contemporary use of clay relative to function and sculpture. Handbuilding and throwing techniques are introduced. Emphasis is placed on quality craftsmanship and creativity. Special materials fee: $40.00.
275. Cultural Studies Through Art - 3-6 hours
The study of the visual arts and culture of a region or country through travel and research.
299. Animated Graphics for Television - 3 hours
Prerequisites: ART 101, 108, 201. Experience in animation for television production. The end product will be an animated video sample. Special materials fee of $30.00.
301. Typography - 2 hours
Prerequisite: ART 217. Instruction concerning the history, aesthetics, and practical application of type in advertising and graphic design.
303. History of Renaissance Art - 3 hours
Study of works of art from the early and late Renaissance in Italy and Northern Europe.
305. Computers & Design - 3 hours
Prerequisites: ART 217, 301, and 320. Students will have an opportunity to design and implement a number of projects on the computer including a newsletter and illustration project. Students will learn software programs that are standard in the profession, including Aldus PageMaker (page layout) and Freehand (illustration), and Microsoft Word (word processing). Peripheral equipment such as scanners and printers (Black and White and Color) are also introduced.
310. Baroque and Rococo - 3 hours
The Art of the Baroque & Rococo in Europe in the 17th & 18th Centuries. Major painting, sculpture and architecture will be studied. Aesthetic principles will be covered.
315. Advanced Sculpture - 3 hours
Prerequisites: ART 211 and 225. Research experimental work with a variety of sculpture media. Two hours consecutively. Special materials fee of $40.00.
318. Introduction to Layout - 3 hours
Prerequisites: ART 301, 217, and 320. Introduction to the use of basic tools, equipment and techniques necessary to produce "mock-ups" or layouts of printed pieces used in the advertising business as a preview for the client and a guide for the illustrator, photographer, typesetter and printer. The history and use of type as well as its practical application in layout are explored in depth.
319. Technical Illustration Techniques for Advertising - 3 hours
Prerequisite: ART 204. Instruction in the use of all basic tools, equipment and techniques used in technical illustration and technical product rendering for advertising.
320. Commercial Art Material and Processes - 3 hours
Prerequisite: ART 217. This course teaches the basic principles of the graphic arts from a design aspect, including line reproduction, halftone, reproduction, four-color process, special color procedures, type and the major printing processes used today. Special materials fee of $20.00.
321. Art History Survey II - 3 hours
Survey of Western art from the Renaissance to the present with emphasis on art as a reflection of the social and cultural developments of man.
323. Commercial Illustration - 3 hours
Prerequisite: ART 318. Instruction in and application of illustration techniques used in magazine, book, advertising and other illustration fields.
325. History of Modern Art - 3 hours
An examination of the major art movements in Europe and America from Post-Impressionism to the 1940's.
326. History of American Art - 3 hours
Study of the development of American art, its origins and the emergence of an American style.
360. Elementary Art Methods - 2 hours
Prerequisites: ART 100GS. for non-art majors, admission to Teacher Education. This course is concerned with the theory and philosophy for elementary art methods of teaching children through art. A field experience of observation and teaching is required.
370.12. Art Methods - 2 hours
Theory and philosophy for secondary school art. Supervision and curricula.
390. Glass - 3 hours
Prerequisite: ART 211. The course will offer basic offhand techniques using the medium of glass. Although emphasis is placed on glassblowing, other techniques of glass manipulation may be performed. The course may be taken for three semesters for a total of nine credit hours. Students registering for the second time register for 390B; the third time 390C. All tools and materials are supplied except for some protective clothing. Special materials fee of $40.00.
399. Art Apprenticeship Program - 1-4 hours
Students interested in working with a department faculty member in a variety of departmental activities should contact faculty members who would agree to supervise the learning experiences for the semester. A formal work plan must be in writing and approved by the faculty advisor.
400. Composition and Drawing - 3 hours
Prerequisites: ART 101 and 108. Advanced work with the elements of composition in a variety of drawing media.
401. Fiber Construction - 3 hours
Prerequisites: ART 100GS. or 108. Course provides fundamental training in the area of fiber construction and computer graphics. Work will include hooking, weaving, basketry, felting, stitchery-applique and papermaking. Course may be taken for three semesters for a total credit of 9 hours. Students registering for the second time register for 401B, the third time 401C. Special materials fee of $10.00.
402. Surface Design - 3 hours
Prerequisites: ART 100GS. or 108. Course provides fundamental training in surface design on fabric and computer graphics. Work will be done with direct dyeing, liquid resists, bound resists, direct printing, and stencil printing. Course may be taken for three semesters for a total credit of 9 hours. Students registering the second time register for 402B, the third time 402C. Special materials fee of $15.00.
403. Individual Problems in Art - 1-9 hours
Prerequisite: Approval by department. Independent study for majors and minors in Art. Intensive study in a selected art field. Students should not take more than 3 hours of ART 403 in any one semester. Special materials fee $8.00 per hour for students working in Ceramics, Glass or Sculpture.
404. Advanced Advertising Design - 3 hours
Prerequisite: ART 318. Advanced instruction in the area of advertising design allowing the student the opportunity to develop advertising concepts and produce related visuals for multimedia use. For example, a student may select a productor service, generate a sales approach, write copy, and produce visuals for print, outdoor and TV ads.
405/505. History of 19th Century Art - 3 hours
A study of the development of 19th century art in Europe: Neo-Classicism, Romanticism, Realism, and Impressionism and Post-Impressionism.
406. Senior Project and Exhibit - 3 hours
Prerequisite: Approval by department. Students majoring in Art will enroll in ART 406. They will develop a senior project and portfolio and present a Senior Show under the supervision of a staff member. (Education students: this course will be taken during the senior year, the first semester before or after the student teaching experience.) (Special materials fee $5.00 per hour for students working in Ceramics, Glass or Sculpture.)
409. History of Nebraska Art - 1-3 hours
A survey of art and artists in 19th and 20th century Nebraska and how their art relates to the history of art in western civilization. Unique characteristics of regional art forms are examined and discussed.
410. Advanced Graphic Design - 3 hours
Prerequisite: ART 318. Advanced instruction in producing designs for logos, packaging, book and record jackets, posters, etc. Graphic Design history slide lectures and study of Semiotic Theory are introduced with projects.
412. Package Design - 3 hours
Prerequisite: ART 318. Instruction and practice in producing designs for innovative packaging, point-of-purchase appeal, marketing and practicality of design with regard to aesthetics, function and legalities. The production of mechanicals will also be emphasized. Special materials fee of $10.00.
413. Graphic Art - 3 hours
Prerequisites: Permission of instructor; portfolio presentation required. Course provides actual studio situation with clients solicited from the community. A small number of advanced students will operate a commercial art studio under the guidance of the instructors. Students may enroll for two semesters of Art Practicum and may take an additional semester with the permission of the instructor if space is available.
415. Late Modern: Art Since the '50s - 3 hours
An examination of contemporary directions in the visual arts since 1950. Special emphasis given to current trends in both Europe and the United States, including new modes such as video and environmental art.
416. Advanced Painting - 3 hours
Prerequisites: ART 215 and 216. Advanced work with oil, watercolor and acrylic. Two hours consecutively. Special materials fee of $5.00.
420. Printmaking - 3 hours
Prerequisites: ART 101 and 204, or 400. Fundamental printmaking problems dealing with the various creative printmaking processes. Special materials fee of $20.00.
425. Aesthetics - 2 hours
Prerequisite: Twelve hours in Art. Research into problems of aesthetic attitude and content.
430. Advanced Ceramics - 3 hours
Prerequisites: ART 211 and 230. Advanced techniques of throwing and handbuilding are introduced as will as fundamental problems in glaze chemistry. This course emphasized the students continued development of quality in their work and personal creativity. Special materials fee of $40.00.
433. Loom Weaving - 3 hours
Fundamentals of single layer pattern weaves, special techniques, multi- layer double weaves, flat and pile rug techniques and pattern drafting. This course may be taken for three semesters for a total credit of nine hours. Students desiring advanced loom weaving will register for 433B the second time, 433C the third time. Special materials fee of $10.00.
440/840P. Special Problems in Art History - 1-3 hours
Course by appointment. Prerequisites: ART 221 and 321. Research on specific problems which may involve historical, philosophical, aesthetic or critical aspects of arts.
450. Art Specialization - 1-9 hours
Prerequisite: Approval by department; for students on the Bachelor of Fine Arts program who have completed 30 hours of Art. Independent study in Art and intensive study in a selected art field. Special materials fee $8.00 per hour for students working in Ceramics, Glass or Sculpture.
474. Special Topics in Art - 3-6 hours
Designed to meet special needs for students in Art Education, Art History, and Studio Art. Must have special permission of department chair to enroll.
