Communication Disorders Major
- Two options are available:
- I. Communication Disorders Comprehensive Option-Bachelor of
Science Degree
- II. Pre-Professional Comprehensive Option-Bachelor of
Science in Education Degree
A Field Endorsement with teaching certification in Speech/Language Pathology is
available upon completion of the Master's degree.
A minor in Communication Disorders is available.
I. Communication Disorders Comprehensive Option-Bachelor of
Science Degree Communication Disorders Major:
This degree may be chosen by students who wish to obtain a liberal arts background with
a Comprehensive Option in Communication Disorders and who plan to seek state licensure but
not teacher certification as speech/language pathologists. It prepares students
pre-professionally for work in the clinical setting.

II. Pre-Professional Comprehensive Option-Bachelor of Science in
Education Degree
This degree must be selected by students who wish to obtain state licensure and teacher
certification, qualifying them to provide speech/language pathology services in the public
schools as well as in clinical settings.
Students must apply for admission to the Teacher Education
program while enrolled in PTE 200. Transfer students who have taken the equivalent of
PTE 200 must apply during their first term at UNK.
Note: Licensure and teacher certification require a Master of Science in
Education Degree with a Speech-Language Pathology Major.
Majors must have a "C" grade or better in all undergraduate communication
disorders courses and must have earned a 2.75 GPA by the beginning of the junior year (or
have consent of faculty) in order to continue in the program.
Upon completion of the Master of Science Degree in Speech-Language Pathology, followed
by a satisfactory score on a national examination, and a year of supervised professional
experience, the graduate becomes eligible for national certification by the American
Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
The Speech, Language, and Hearing Clinic
Professional preparation in speech/language pathology requires clinical experience with
children and adults who have been referred to the clinic for speech/language and hearing
assessment and/or treatment. This program provides an opportunity to study, in a practical
setting, the application of skills and techniques learned in the academic program. The
clinic provides an integral part of the initial educational program in speech/language
pathology.
The minor in Communication Disorders provides basic information about human
communication development and disorders. It is appropriate for students majoring in
elementary and special education, psychology, human development, social work, and English
as a Second Language.
- Students seeking a minor in Communication Disorders must complete the following 24 hours
