General Studies Program: Requirements

Go directly to Writing Intensive Courses, or Cultural Diversity.

All UNK students must satisfactorily complete the courses listed within the General Studies areas. This can be done through the usual process of course completion or by means of waiver of a specific course requirement. The requirements for waiving a General Studies course have been established by the General Studies Council. Each student seeking a bachelor's degree at UNK must complete 45 hours of General Studies courses, distributed into the categories listed below. Students may waive up to three hours of the overall credit hour requirements. It should be noted that certain majors require that specific General Studies courses be taken. Students should make choices with the guidance of the academic advisor, so that their interests and major requirements are met. Colleges and individual programs within a College can, with the approval of the appropriate College committee, require specific General Studies courses which will be listed under the requirements for the degree programs.

To ensure that the General Studies program provides students with a wide variety of points of view and allows them to concentrate in their junior and senior years on their major subject, students in their freshman and sophomore years are encouraged to complete the General Studies program. Also, students are urged to complete their Math requirement during their freshman year.

Writing Intensive Courses

Writing intensive courses are courses outside of the Communications area, i.e., ENG 101, 102, which are designed to further develop the student's writing skills. In general, writing intensive courses (1) provide students with the opportunity to revise their written work in order to develop their writing skills and (2) use a grading system in which a significant portion of the student's grade is based on written work. Students are required to complete twelve hours of writing intensive courses, some of which must be written within the General Studies Program. Courses which can be used to meet this requirement will be designated WI in the class schedule beginning in Fall, 1995.

Cultural Diversity

Students are required to complete six hours of coursework which are designed to enhance an understanding of cultural diversity. In general, cultural diversity courses provide students with an understanding of the experiences and values of groups and cultures outside the mainstream of American life. These courses may be outside the General Studies area. Courses which can be used to meet this requirement will be designated CD in the class schedule beginning in Fall, 1995.
