The Learning Strategies Office (LSO) provides support for UNK students
through a variety of tutoring services and instruction for academic
enhancement. Programs and services offered include:
- FREE Peer Tutoring for ALL University of Nebraska at Kearney students.
Tutoring is targeted on the General Studies curriculum, and the LSO will
network students to assistance for upper level classes. Qualified upper class
or graduate students receive College Reading and Learning Association training
as tutors. They are available during office hours in the LSO as well as
evening hours in the library or designated study lab. Students may also make
appointments with tutors if scheduled hours do not meet their needs.
- University Foundations
Classes are recommended for freshman and transfer students. The class is
designed to improve student academic performance and persistence as well as to
assist with the transition to the University of Nebraska at Kearney. In a
University Foundations Class, students learn how to approach new ideas and
subjects, how to study topics efficiently and how to perform better in
discussions and on tests. Time management, career exploration, and determining
a major as well as important student development topics are included in the
class. Students earn three credits in this graded class that may be counted as
elective credits toward graduation.
-
Special Topic Classes on effective
study strategies are available for students who wish to improve their learning
techniques and study skills. Modules offered include: Listening and Notetaking
Skills, Study Skills, Vocabulary Expansion, Test Anxiety, Reading Improvement,
Spelling Improvement, How to Write a Research Paper, Critical Thinking Skills
and Time Management. These short courses will last four weeks and can be
arranged for individual instruction. Each of the classes is worth 1 credit
hour and will be graded on a credit/no credit basis. The classes can be used
to maintain full-time student enrollment, but do not count as credits for
graduation. These courses are open to all students who want to enhance their
academic success and skills.
- Additional academic assistance: Students may also benefit from using the
computer learning lab at the LSO. The lab is open during the academic year on
weekdays, and evening hours are posted. LSO professional staff provide
workshops and presentations on various aspects of effective study for classes
and campus organizations. Accommodation plans and testing accommodations for
UNK classes are provided for students with disabilities. The staff is also
available for individual consultations for academic strategies and study
skills.
