Mission:
The mission of Family and Consumer Sciences is to enable families, both as individual
units and generally as a social institution to build and maintain systems of action which
lead (1) to maturing in individual self formation, (2) to encourage enlightened,
cooperative participation in the critique and formation of social goals and means of
accomplishing them; and (3) to enable individuals to be critically aware of consumer
resources and their management as well as to develop the competence to base actions upon
rational, responsible decisions. (The Department's mission statement is adopted in part
from the Mission Statement of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.)
Department Objectives:
- Human Development and Family Relationships: To present opportunities to identify
universal principles governing development in the family, encounter and analyze a variety
of theories, and studying the complex but integrated life-styles and family structures
which evolve over the life span.
- Foods and Nutrition: To educate students for a profession responsible for the
nutritional care of individuals and groups. Includes preparation for becoming a member of
the American Dietetic Association or for professional careers in the food service
industry.
- Interior Design: To provide students with a background in the physiological,
sociological and economic aspects of housing and in the selection of housing, commercial
and residential interior design, furnishings and equipment, with additional specialization
in kitchen and bath design
- Family and Consumer Sciences Education: To prepare students for certification for
teaching in the family and consumer sciences at the secondary level. They may elect to
focus on family life, foods and nutrition or take a general perspective. The occupational
family and consumer sciences teaching endorsement is an option.
- The Interior Design program is accredited by the National Kitchen and Bath Design
Association.
- The Undergraduate Human Development and Family Relationships program is approved by the
National Council on Family Relations.
- (Students fulfilling the NCFR Curriculum requirements may apply for the Provisional
Certified Family Life Educator designation.)
- The Dietetics program is accredited by the American Dietetics Association.
Department Policy
All students completing a major or minor in the department will be required to earn a
"C" or better grade in all courses in the major or minor.
College of Business and Technology Graduation Requirements
All students graduating with a degree from the College of Business and Technology must
take at least 50% of their major area credit hour requirements from the College of
Business and Technology at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
All students graduating with a degree from the College of Business and Technology must
take a minimum of 30 of their last 36 hours of credit needed for their degree from the
University of Nebraska at Kearney.
FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCES MAJOR
Three options are available in this major:
- Interior Design Comprehensive - Bachelor of Science Degree
- Human Development and Family Relationships - Bachelor of
Science Degree
- Family and Consumer Sciences Education -Teaching Field
Endorsement - Bachelor of Science in Education Comprehensive
Dietetics Major - Bachelor of Science Degree--ADA Approved Plan V Program. An endorsement in Occupational Family and Consumer Sciences is
offered in conjunction with the Teaching Field Endorsement.
- Minors in Family and Consumer Sciences are:
- Nutrition minor
Human Development and Family Relationships minor
Courses with the prefix FCSC are offered by the department.
