Department Objectives:

To increase students’ understanding of the roles and functions of the mass media in society;
To offer students educational experiences that allow them to manage, create and analyze mediated messages;
To prepare students for careers in specialized areas such as news reporting, advertising, broadcasting, multimedia, public relations, and sports communication;
To acquaint the student with organized knowledge in various areas within the field of communication arts and sciences;
To train the student as a practitioner of the art and science of speech and theatre, able to assume leadership roles in his or her profession, his or her community, and his or her day-by-day social relationships with others;
To prepare well-qualified students to become teachers of speech and theatre;
To foster research in speech and cognate fields.

Speech-Theatre Teaching Subject Endorsement Option - Bachelor of Arts in Education Degree
Speech Communication Teaching Subject Endorsement Option - Bachelor of Arts in Education Degree Minors in Advertising, Broadcasting, Journalism, Public Relations, Multimedia Minor for Computer Science and Information Systems Majors, Multimedia Minor for Journalism and Mass Communications Majors, Multimedia Minor for Visual Communications and Graphic Design Majors, Sports Communication, Organizational Communication, and Speech Communication are available. The Elementary Education major has a specially defined minor in Speech/Theatre.
Courses with the prefix JMC and SPCH are offered by the department.

Minimum Grade Point Average in the Major
Students selecting a major in the Department of Communications must earn a minimum 2.5 G.P.A. in the major.

Portfolio Requirements
Students selecting a major in Journalism and Mass Communications must compile evidence of achievement particular to their chosen career field. Students will present this portfolio and discuss its contents with a Faculty Portfolio Committee in the semester prior to their graduation.
