ASSESSMENT PLAN
The assessment measures are reviewed by the faculty annually and changes made as
indicated. |
2000-2001 ASSESSMENT
The department continues to assess how the BYU CAPE tests should be used and interpreted.
A lack of personnel trained in this area has slowed the evaluation, but a new professor
offers the department some expertise in this field.Department faculty are considering the addition of a writing proficiency
exam in SPAN 304 (piloted in Spring 2001) as a good complement to the SOPI (Simulated Oral
Proficiency Exam) currently administered |
1999-2000 ASSESSMENT
The department is reassessing how the BYU CAPE tests should be interpreted and used. The
Computer Adapted Placement Exams test grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension; they
do not test speaking or listening skills. The exams provide helpful information on several
skills, but not all skills. The department will discuss whether to give the CAPE tests to
advanced students to provide indications of progress or whether to use SOPI along with
exams given in courses such as SPAN 303, Advanced Spanish Grammar. Although the plan for the department chair to
interview groups of graduating seniors is desirable, it is challenging to get students to
commit to an interview at the end of the semester. Interviews will be held earlier in the
semester. |
1998-99 ASSESSMENT
The BYU CAPE tests are helpful but limited assessment tools. The department will reassess
their role during the next two years. |
1997-98 ASSESSMENT
Problems with technology and lack of personnel slowed the implementation of parts of the
assessment plan. Use of the Simulated Oral Proficiency Interview (SOPl) will begin in
1998-1999.The decision for the
department chair to interview groups of graduating seniors is an advantageous change in
the plan.
Beginning in 1998-1999, the department
chair will interview graduating students who earn the M.A. Ed. with a specialization in
French, German, or Spanish. These students will also respond to a written survey on their
educational experience and their suggestions for changes in courses.
Recent alumni will receive written
surveys to evaluate their education in the Department of Modern Languages. |
1996-97 ASSESSMENT
The faculty has completely revised the assessment plan. |
Assessment plan completely revised
from the original plan in 1996-97 and implemented in 1997-98.
