STANDARDIZED
TESTS (Discontinued Plan) |
ASSESSMENT PLAN
A locally developed test, checked against the norm of test results of native speakers, is
administered to those majors completing Spanish 303, Advanced Grammar. A series of ACTFL
(American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) proficiency examinations is
administered to Spanish majors, culminating in a half-hour oral examination when they
complete Spanish 304, Advanced Conversation and Composition. (Other Foreign Languages are considering this
program. A decision about their using it as their assessment measure will be made during
this academic year.) |
1993-94 ASSESSMENT
These tests showed that UNK students in Spanish have a higher comprehension level but a
lower pronunciation level than the norm. A new course, Spanish 302 Phonetics/Phonology was
implemented spring of 1995 to correct that problem. Students of the 1990's do not
understand perfect tenses, but that is because of weaknesses in teaching English in the
public schools, and needs to be corrected nationally. |
PORTFOLIOS
(Discontinued Plan) |
ASSESSMENT PLAN
Graduate students in education assemble a portfolio of research papers, examinations and
other samples of writing. A similar program is being implemented for undergraduates and
should be in place by the end of the 1993-94 year. |
1993-94 ASSESSMENT
The results of our portfolio evaluations are still spotty. We do not receive a good
percentage of portfolios. What we do see is that rewriting programs in classes helps
greatly. We are thinking of converting one of the courses in each language to
"writing intensive" courses. |
SURVEYS
(Discontinued Plan) |
ASSESSMENT PLAN
At the conclusion of their student teaching experience, Foreign Languages education majors
are given a questionnaire asking them to evaluate their preparation in the subject area.
The results of the instrument are available to the department. |
1993-94 ASSESSMENT
These surveys will be revised and conducted in academic year 1995-96. |

ASSESSMENT PLAN
The assessment measures are reviewed by the faculty annually and changes made as
indicated. |
1993-94 ASSESSMENT
We are not pleased yet with the portfolio project. We are submitting a grant to have our
faculty trained in the ACTFL testing procedures. Two will be trained at UNL in May. We are
hoping that the rest can be trained during the following year. |
