Alcohol and Drug Counseling Certificate
This certificate meets the need for clinicians and students in the counseling
field to obtain a professional license in addiction counseling. The State of Nebraska offers an
Alcohol and Drug Counselor License that requires initial education in addiction counseling beyond the graduate
level education courses for a Mental Health Counseling License. These educational requirements include courses
specific to addiction and a practicum in addiction counseling. This certificate offers the courses required for
Alcohol and Drug Counselor licensure allowing clinical mental health counseling students and
Mental Health professionals in the field to gain the education necessary to hold this specialty license.
The certificate also fills a larger need for an expanded rural behavioral healthcare force in the State of Nebraska
as has been identified by the Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska and the Nebraska State Legislature.
Student Learning Outcomes for the Alcohol and Drug Counseling Certificate:
- Know and apply ethical standards of the profession, including those specific to the practice of addiction counseling
- Develop a culturally diverse populations perspective of addiction counseling including knowledge of the multicultural competencies endorsed by the counseling profession
- Develop knowledge of human development and apply that knowledge to develop interventions to treat various client populations
- Develop knowledge of theories of addiction and addictive behaviors, including screening, assessments, and co-occurring disorders, and applies strategies for prevention, intervention and treatment of addiction
- Know major individual and group counseling theories, counseling techniques, and the diagnostic process and their use in the conceptualization of client concerns
- Demonstrate application of individual and group counseling theories, assessments, and interviewing skills, to address client concerns
The student population to be served includes:
- Students in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program at UNK.
- Students from other institutions currently working on a graduate degree in the counseling profession
- Students who have recently completed a graduate degree in a counseling related field from UNK or other institutions
- Professionals in the counseling field who already hold a counseling degree and wish to obtain the Alcohol and Degree License
Alcohol and Drug Counseling - 12 hours
- Take all of the following: (12 hours)
- CSP 807P, Clinical Treatment Issues in Addictions Counseling- 3 hours
- CSP 808P, Assessment, Case Planning, and Management of Addictions- 3 hours
- CSP 809P, Medical and Psychosocial Aspects of Addictions- 3 hours
- CSP 886, Advanced Practicum in Clinical Mental Health Counseling- 3 hours
