SUPPLEMENTAL TEACHING ENDORSEMENT IN BILINGUAL EDUCATION

- Minimum required for endorsement = 47
- The goal of transitional bilingual education is to prepare children for life in the
English-speaking mainstream while providing instruction in basic reading, arithmetic and
other coursework in their native language in the early grades.
- The bilingual teacher develops the following competencies:
- 1. An understanding of English as a language among other languages;
- 2. An understanding of the target population's language;
- 3. Cultural understanding and a sensitivity to the target population's culture and an
awareness of those elements which are determined arbitrarily and culturally in the
American society;
- 4. Competency in the methodologies, curricula, research, and the learning activities for
successful bilingual teaching.
- This supplemental endorsement is administered jointly by the Colleges of Fine Arts and
Humanities (Modern Languages) and Education. It is available to students majoring in
Elementary Education or Special Education.
- A. Language Proficiency for the target population
- (to be determined by proficiency examination or advanced coursework in a foreign
language)
B. Required courses in cultural background
- Take 9 hours from:
- SOC 250GS, Anthropology - 3 hours
- SPAN 475/476, Spanish Study Abroad IV - 6 hours
(Prereq: a 300 level Spanish course)
- C. Required courses in linguistics
- Take 6 hours from:
- ENG 304, Grammar I - 3 hours
- SPAN 408, Comparative Grammar - 3 hours -
- D. Approved Bilingual Methodological courses
- Take 6 hours from:
- FORL 470, TESOL I - 3 hours
- FORL 472, Methods of Teaching Foreign Languages - 3
hours

The following three courses are usually taken in a Spanish-speaking country under the
auspices of the University of Nebraska at Kearney International Studies Program.
- Teaching of Reading (bilingual) - 3 hours
- Teaching of Mathematics (bilingual) - 3 hours
- Teaching of Science (bilingual) - 3 hours
- E. Approved Field Experience in a Bilingual Setting - 17 hours
- PTE 390L, Pre-Student Teaching Field Experience - 1 hour
- PTE 390S, Pre-Student Teaching Field Experience - 1 hour
(Prereq: PTE 290 and concurrently with PTE 300)
- PTE 400, Supervised Student Teaching (assigned in
bilingual classroom) - 15 hours
