Department Objectives

To prepare teachers in subject matter and in methods for the teaching of biology and related subjects;

To help meet the requirements of the general education program;

To furnish adequate background in the biological sciences for pre-professional students and for others who require training in that area;

To prepare students for graduate work and for research;

To prepare students for careers which require general biological knowledge.

Students who plan to major in Biology should have a strong high school background in science (i.e., Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Math). Those who have had (1) an equivalent of 2 years of high school Biology, or (2) 1 year of high school Biology and score at the 70th percentile or above in the Natural Science area on the SAT or ACT test, or (3) who CLEP BIOL 103GS may enroll in BIOL 104GS (Botany) or BIOL 107GS (Zoology), which are applicable to General Studies requirements. Students not having this background should take BIOL 103GS.

A minimum GPA of 2.5 in all coursework counting towards a Biology major or Biology comprehensive major is required for graduation.


Biology Major

Three major options are available:
I. Biology Option-Bachelor of Science Degree
II. Biology Comprehensive Option-Bachelor of Science Degree
Wildlife Emphasis
Molecular Biology Emphasis
Environmental Emphasis
III. Biology Teaching Subject Endorsement Option-Bachelor of Science in Education Degree
The minor in Biology is available for students pursuing majors in other disciplines.
