Performance opportunities exist for all University of Nebraska at Kearney students through participation in band, chorus, orchestra, music-theatre, or small ensembles.
Bands: University band membership is open to all student instrumentalists and academic credit is available for participation. All students interested in the band program should contact band directors before the first rehearsal.
Jazz-Rock Ensemble: Participation in the Jazz-Rock Ensemble provides an opportunity to gain understanding of, and appreciation for, big band, jazz, rock styles, and improvisation. The Ensemble gives scheduled concerts and participates in an annual tour through Nebraska. Members must evidence proficiency in playing the trumpet, trombone, saxophone, piano, guitar, bass, or drums.
Marching Band: The purpose is to provide half-time entertainment; to serve as a foundation for various University instrumental organizations; to participate in ceremonial functions; to serve as a musical/physical outlet for those seeking such activity; and to contribute to high morale and spirit on the UNK campus.
Pep Band: Membership is open to any student instrumental performer. Pep Band plays for all varsity basketball games, as well as other select University events.
Symphonic Band: In addition to playing for commencement and traveling on an annual performance tour, the Symphonic Band presents several concerts per year. Students who play wind or percussion instruments may audition.
Wind Ensemble: This is an audition-only group of 35-40 players. It provides "the best wind literature available at the university level."
Choral Groups: Membership in choral groups is determined by audition. Many of the choirs take special tours throughout the year. Students desiring to perform in these organizations should arrange with choral directors to audition for one or more of these vocal groups. University credit is available.
Choraleers: Students must audition for Choraleers during the first three days of each semester. This choir presents two major concerts per semester as well as a semi-annual tour.
Nebraskats: The Nebraskats are the UNK show choir. They have performed internationally and feature concerts throughout the year. Auditions are held each spring to select members for the following year.
Men's Chorus: This concert choir presents two major concerts per semester. Any interested male student may join; there are no auditions.
Women's Chorus: This concert choir presents two major concerts per semester. Any interested female student may join; there are no auditions.
Vocal Collegium: Members of this chamber are selected from the Choraleers.
Kearney Area Symphony Orchestra: The orchestra provides an opportunity for all string players and selected wind, brass and percussion players to perform. University credit is available.
Music-Theatre: Works to be performed are selected from the entire range of musicodramatic repertoire, and are determined by the interest and availability of singers, instrumentalists, actors and dancers.
Small Ensembles: Representative vocal and instrumental ensembles including vocal jazz, brass quintet, flute choir, saxophone quartet, clarinet quartet, percussion ensemble and others.
