Department Objectives:
- Enable students to develop sports skills which they may use for many years in enrichment
of their leisure hours;
- Offer students recreational and fitness opportunities;
- Emphasize the importance of lifelong appreciation for fitness and healthful living;
- Provide schools with coaches, physical education teachers, athletic trainers and health
education teachers who possess highly developed technical skills, the zeal for educational
betterment and personal and cultural qualities which will make them respected citizens of
communities in which they teach;
- Prepare persons for professions in the leisure markets, sports administration,
recreation, fitness, and travel and tourism.
Entrance Requirements for the Athletic Training
Emphasis of the Exercise Science Comprehensive
This Athletic
Training Education Program is accredited by CAAHEP (Commission on
Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs).
Application Requirements
Freshman or first year as a declared major option
Fall:
- Complete 50 hours of Field Experience
- Complete and turn in all aspects of the official application by the last Friday before
final exams
Spring:
- Complete BIOL 215GS
- Complete PE 264 w/ a C or better
- Complete PE 265 Adv. First aid and critical care w/ a C or better & certification
- Complete all competencies required for all students applying for acceptance
- Complete a total of 100 hours of Field Experience
- Complete favorable evaluations on field experience assignments
- Complete favorable interview w/ the Athletic Training Education Program Committee
- Acquire a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
Athletic
Training Emphasis Acceptance Criteria
- Successful completion of the entire application process
- The number of available openings within the established ratio of student to clinical
instructor will dictate the number of students accepted into the program (may vary from
year to year).
- Cumulative GPA will be ranked for all qualified applicants.
- Each factor contributing to the competencies taught in each pre-requisite course and
field exposure requirements will be considered.
- Complete the number of field exposure hours required for prospective AT students.
- Master all of the competencies presented in all pre-requisite courses.
- Successfully complete all practical examinations to qualify
for acceptance.
- Exhibition of dedication through the students observation / candidacy period will be
evaluated.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION MAJOR
Six Options are available in this major:
- Physical Education Option - Bachelor of Science
Degree
- Physical Education Comprehensive Option -
Bachelor of Science Degree
- Physical Education K-6 Teaching Subject
Endorsement Option - Bachelor of Arts in Education
- Physical Education 7-12 Teaching Subject
Endorsement Option - Bachelor of Arts in Education Degree
- Health Education 7-12 Teaching Subject
Endorsement Option - Bachelor of Arts in Education Degree
- Health and Physical Education K-12 Teaching Field
Endorsement Option - Bachelor of Arts in Education
A minor in Physical Education is available for
students pursuing majors in other disciplines.
Supplemental Endorsements are offered in Adapted
Physical Education, Strength Training,
and Interscholastic Coaching.
Students who complete two Teaching Subject Endorsements or one Teaching Field
Endorsement may complete one or more Supplemental Endorsements.
RECREATION AND PARK MANAGEMENT
Two options are available in this major:
- Recreation Management Option - Bachelor of
Science Degree
- Recreation and Park Management Comprehensive
Option Option - Bachelor of Science Degree
A minor in Travel and Tourism and Recreation and Park Management are
available for students pursuing majors in other disciplines.
SPORTS ADMINISTRATION MAJOR
Two options are available in this major:
- Sports Administration Major Option - Bachelor
of Science Degree
- Sports Administration Comprehensive Option -
Bachelor of Science Degree
A minor in Sports Administration or Sports Communication is available for students
pursuing majors in other disciplines.
Courses with the prefixes PE and REC are offered by the department.
