Promotion of optimal physical and emotional health, prevention of disability and disease, and education for healthful living are goals of Student Health Services. Centrally located on campus in the Student Affairs Building, Student Health has been serving students for more than 75 years. Fully licensed and qualified medical and nursing professionals and helpful office staff work together to provide for UNK student health needs.
IMPORTANT HEALTH REQUIREMENT INFORMATION: All incoming students must have a pre-admission physical completed by a qualified medical professional. Also, all students must provide month and year dates of all childhood and adult vaccinations. All students born after 1956 must provide month and year documentation of having received two MMR (mumps, measles (rubeola), and rubella) vaccinations. Students may also prove immunity by presenting a rubeola antibody titer test result or documentation of physician diagnosed rubeola disease. Students will not be permitted to register for second semester classes until they fulfill these requirements.
Health Services are available for students who are taking seven or more class hours on campus, and/or have paid the semester health fee. Photo ID's are required. Registered nurses see all students and set M.D. or A.R.N.P.C. (Nurse Practitioner) appointments when students need medical attention. Comprehensive health care services include treatment for illness or injury, laboratory tests, vaccinations, minor procedures, gynecological exams, contraceptive counseling and prescription. Additionally, clinic personnel provide healthful living education.
Medical records are privileged communication and strict policies protect confidentiality. Staff members are committed to upholding the student's right to privacy. Information from records will not be presented to anyone without written authorization from the student.
All UNK students should have health insurance coverage. A health insurance plan is available for students enrolled in seven or more class hours. The insurer mails information every August and students may come to the Student Health Services office to get a plan brochure and application form.
International students must have health and accident insurance and will be billed for the cost of the UNK insurance plan. Please see Admission of International Students for specific information regarding insurance requirements.
The semester health fee covers office calls with Student Health clinicians as well as selected procedures, selected treatments, and health education information. Some procedures have reasonable fees. Student Health Services contracts with Kearney Clinic to provide more complex procedures, laboratory, and x-ray services, for their usual fee. Students should bring current health insurance cards with them in the event those services become necessary.
