SATISFACTORY ACADEMIC PROGRESS REQUIREMENTS FOR FINANCIAL AID APPLICANTS AND RECIPIENTS

The Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy is a federal requirement adopted by the Financial Aid Office at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. This policy governs students applying for or receiving federal aid from one or more of the following programs:

1 Federal Perkins Loan
2 Federal Stafford Loan
3 Federal Pell Grant
4 Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant
5 State Scholarship Assistance
6 Scholarship Assistance Program
7 Federal College Work Study
8 State of Nebraska Tuition Waivers
9 Federal Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students

Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements are established for two reasons: 1) to encourage students to meet and maintain the University’s minimum academic standard or GPA, and 2) to ensure that students make progress toward a degree.

Satisfactory progress is measured once each year at the end of the Spring Semester. The calculation considers both grade point average and percentage of attempted hours which are successfully completed from the previous Summer, Fall and Spring term.

Termination of aid eligibility will occur if the student fails to meet either the required GPA or minimum percentage of hours attempted. No aid will be awarded to a student whose eligibility has been terminated. Students will receive written notification of their termination status.

The University of Nebraska at Kearney minimum academic progress requirements are:

Undergraduate students with 27 or fewer earned hours must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 1.75 and successfully complete a minimum of 60% of total hours attempted during the current academic year.

Undergraduate students with 28 or more earned hours must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 and successfully complete a minimum of 75% of total hours attempted during the current academic year.

Undergraduate students are permitted to receive financial aid until 150 credits have been earned. The Financial Aid Office will assist the student through the semester in which 150 credits have accrued.

Graduate students must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 and successfully complete a minimum of 80% of total hours attempted during the current academic year.

Graduate students are permitted to receive financial aid until 45 credits beyond the Bachelors Degree have been earned. Students in a Specialist Degree may earn an additional 80 credits beyond the Bachelors Degree.

Reinstatement of aid will occur when the student meets the minimum cumulative GPA and the percentage of hours attempted. Student attempting to reinstate themselves must enroll at a level at least as great as the semester that resulted in suspension (i.e. full time, 3/4 time, 1/2 time).

It is the student’s responsibility to notify the Financial Aid Office of possible reinstatement of eligibility.

If extenuating circumstances have affected a student’s progress, a written appeal may be submitted. This appeal must be received by the deadline stated on the termination notice. Appeals are generally limited to such extraordinary circumstances such as medical, family or personal emergencies and should include appropriate documentation. Appeals will be reviewed by a committee and a written response will be sent to the student regarding the final decision.
