FINANCIAL AID

The University of Nebraska at Kearney provides financial assistance in the form of scholarships, grants, loans and work. Our mission is to be for our students the place for information about assistance provided by the federal government, State of Nebraska, the University and outside sources. Frequently students receiving assistance to pay for college at UNK are funded through a variety of sources. It is the responsibility of the Office of Financial Aid to coordinate the application and awarding process of multiple types of aid for our students.

Federal and State of Nebraska assistance (grants, loans and work-study) is awarded on the basis of need. Need is defined by determining the "expected family contribution". The expected family contribution is determined by a Congressionally created formula called "Federal Methodology". This formula is an analysis of the family’s income and assets as reported on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students interested in applying for federal and state aid should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid as soon as possible after January 1. FAFSA’s are available at the UNK Office of Financial Aid, high school guidance offices and Educational Planning Centers in Lincoln, Omaha and Kearney. Students should also complete the UNK Financial Aid Information Form, which is available from our office. Copies of federal tax returns are also requested of all applicants and their parents, if the applicant is a dependent student. Once these documents are received in the Office of Financial Aid, the student’s applicant can be verified for correctness and financial aid can be awarded. UNK may request additional documentation from a family if it is necessary to verify a student’s eligibility. Requests for additional information will be sent in writing to the student.

Some sources of financial aid are limited and therefore applicants are urged to complete their application file (the FAFSA, UNK Financial Aid Information Form and taxes) as soon as possible to obtain the best financial aid packages.

For information on applying for merit based scholarships see Scholarships.
