ASSESSMENT PLAN
At least one selected student production a year will be submitted for review in the Kennedy Center/American College Theater Festival(KC/ACFT) at either the Associate or Participating level.
1999-2000 ASSESSMENT
1998-99 ASSESSMENT
1997-98 ASSESSMENT
The Theatre program is developing a voice production class for Theatre students (see 1993-94, 1994-5) and will propose it in 1998.
1996-97 ASSESSMENT
Threshers, submitted as an Associate production, was selected as a regional alternate production. UNK students received Meritorious Achievement Awards in Directing, Scenic Design, Lighting Design and Sound Design. A UNK student was a regional finalist in Irene Ryan Acting Audition Competition and another the winner of the regional lighting design competition.

The increase in quantity as well as quality of ACTF awards indicates improving student achievement. Theatre will continue to build on these successes to further improve our program.

A UNK Theatre student was the winner of the regional lighting design competition.

1995-96 ASSESSMENT
We had two students in the Irene Ryan Action Audition Competition, one as a regional semi-finalist and one as a regional alternate to the national Irene Ryan Acting Audition Competition.
1994-95 ASSESSMENT
Our student production, using an African American in a traditional English part, was praised for "non-traditional casting." The balance between "truth and style" was criticized, with too much emphasis on style; not enough on "sense of scene." This was a result of a younger cast who had not taken much of the coursework that is in place. The Program will try to select plays to better match student progress, however the challenge of this play provided an opportunity for students to learn much as they stretched to achieve that balance.

Reviewers repeated the critique of voice production, noting that those students who had had the vocal work that the department offers did better than those who had not. This confirms that students are learning valuable techniques in our present offerings. We will, however, continue to pursue a separate course for Theatre students.

Lighting continues to be a problem. The reviewer suggested a request for more power to the theatre but the submitted request has not been approved.

The Theatre program had one student as a regional finalist in the Irene Ryan Acting Audition Competition.

1993-94 ASSESSMENT
Within the past year we have allowed all 4 plays in our season to be evaluated by ACTF. In the past we had only one evaluated.

Reviewers noted the quality of acting in Shakespeare for seven individual students. One reviewer commended the play as "an elegantly conceived production."

Critics identified a need for students to focus on vocal production. The Department has coursework, SPCH 205, Voice and Articulation, but the class serves the needs of speech as well as theatre students. A Theatre course in voice will be proposed as soon as is feasible. Additional sound reinforcement has been provided for student productions.

Reviews also stated that the steep lighting produced problems. A new house light pipe has been installed to ease this situation.

Since ACTF is a competition process we have found that more of our students work is being considered for national recognition.
