ASSESSMENT PLAN
Discontinued 1998-99

Revised 1997-98
The Comprehensive Examination (CE-R) was revised in 1998 to assess the effectiveness of selected key courses in building the relevant knowledge base computer literacy in our students. The major results from administering this exam will be the statistical correlation between student scores in each content area and whether or not they took the related course. Each correlation will be an indicator of the effectiveness of a given course in developing the relevant content-based knowledge and skills.

All graduating psychology majors take a comprehensive exam representing content of each psychology course and a number of overarching, contentious issues that are covered in the contexts of several courses. (The department hopes to implement the comprehensive exam during the 1993-4 academic year.)

1998-99 ASSESSMENT
We no longer administer the "Comprehensive Exam" because the ACAT provides us with the same information: how well our students do in a given area contingent upon whether or not they had the relevant coursework. Further, the is a standardized national exam, which is more representative (than the Comprehensive Exam) of the knowledge-base expectations of American psychologists in general.
1997-98 ASSESSMENT
Eighteen graduating psychology majors took the CE-R in Spring 1998. Correlation between the scores in a given course area and whether or not each student took the course was computed. The average correlation for the 16 course content areas was .28, with a range from -.05 to .67. Most of these correlations were statistically significant. These results are only preliminary and cannot yet be used for decision making because of the small sample.
