ASSESSMENT PLAN
begun 1997-1998
The department chair will interview groups of graduating seniors every semester.

Beginning in 1998-1999, the department chair will interview graduating students who earn the M.A. Ed. with a specialization in French, German, or Spanish. These students will also respond to a written survey on their educational experience and their suggestions for changes in courses.

2000-2001 ASSESSMENT
Exit interviews with undergraduates were suspended for the 2000-2001 year because of time constraints and in light of the fact that students participated in the department’s Academic Program Review in order to offer comments and suggestions to the Review Team. As a result of these recommendations, the department intends to create topics courses at the 400-level during 2001-2002. In response to suggestions in previous years regarding the need for more conversation, the department brought in native speakers of French, German, and Spanish to participate with students at conversation tables and in selected classes.

The department chair held an exit interview with the graduate student who completed the M.A. Ed.- Spanish in Spring 2001. This graduate rated as “excellent” his educational experience in the department. The department will seriously consider his suggestion that graduate students be encouraged to attend professional conferences and present papers.
The student also suggested additional flexibility in course offerings and requirements. The department, having already dealt with this issue as the student pursued his degree, added the option of a pedagogy elective in the program.
1999-2000 ASSESSMENT
In response to suggestions about advising, the department chair developed a plan for extended department advising. All students who have a major or a minor in French, German, and Spanish are assigned to a specific advisor in Modern Languages. This plan encourages all students, including those with majors in other departments, to seek advising for the additional major or the minor in Modern Languages.

The department chair participated in oral comprehensive exams for the two graduate students. Since these sessions included discussions of professional development and career plans, the chair eliminated exit interviews.

1998-99 ASSESSMENT

Graduating students interviewed from 1997-1999 suggested that more writing be required in courses. Taking these comments into account along with the need to provide WI courses, the department had three courses designated Writing Intensive (SPAN 304, GERM 304, and FREN 401).

There were no exit interviews with graduate students.

1997-98 ASSESSMENT
The department chair interviewed groups of graduating seniors. These interviews indicated many areas of satisfaction with the programs and several areas where change is needed. Faculty will identify ways to update or modify course content in response to student suggestions where indicated.
