ASSESSMENT PLAN
A formal system of tracking alumni will be implemented immediately.
1997-98 ASSESSMENT
Employment rates of recent graduates continues to be tracked by the department. Since the spring semester of 1993, 80% of JMC graduates have been able to secure full-time employment in their chosen career fields. In reality, that figure is probably higher as some graduates, who may have moved and whose new addresses are unknown, may have found full-time employment or entered graduate schools. The overall employment rate of 80% this year is up over that of last year. This may be due to a better job market, the result of the department requiring a portfolio prior to graduation resulting in prospective employees better prepared for interviews or just a minor fluctuation.

The fifth edition of the JMC Flyer has been produced and will be mailed to alumni during the summer of 1998. The alumni letter has been useful for updating the mailing database and further developing the list of possible sources of internships. Good internships have been developed recently as a result of networking with graduates who are now in positions which allow them to recommend or select interns.

1996-97 ASSESSMENT
The chair continues to track employment rates of recent graduates. Since the spring semester of 1993, 76% of JMC graduates have been able to secure full-time employment in their chosen career fields. That figure may actually be higher as some graduates, who may have moved and whose new addresses are unknown, may have found full-time employment. The current employment rate of 76% is consistent with the data generated as a result of the alumni survey (n = 250) administered during the summer of 1995. The fourth edition of the JMC Flyer has been produced and will be mailed to alumni during the summer of 1997. The alumni letter has been useful for updating the mailing database and further developing the list of possible sources of internships.
1995-96 ASSESSMENT
The survey produced to measure employment and satisfaction with the education received at UNK was mailed to JMC graduates during the summer of 1995. The next such survey is scheduled to be administered during the summer of 2000. The survey afforded the Department the opportunity to update its mailing list. It also provided the Department with a method of determining the success of graduates at securing full-time employment in the field.

The third edition of the JMC Flyer was produced and mailed to alumni during the summer of 1996. Several individuals responded, in writing, to the "AlumNews Update" section by indicating that the organizations for which they work accept interns or hire recent college graduates from Mass Media programs.

1994-95 ASSESSMENT
The second edition of the JMC Flyer, the department's alumni newsletter, was created and mailed. Employment surveys were mailed with the newsletters. Approximately 1,000 surveys were sent in two waves to about 600 graduates; 248 were returned. The data gathered allowed the department to update many of the addresses of the graduates. The information also revealed interesting trends in terms of employment statistics. Briefly, 72 percent of the graduates were able to secure full-time employment in journalism or mass communications, on the average it took them just less than four months to secure this position and they stayed with their first employer just over three years. Fifty-three percent are still employed in journalism or mass communication, respondents reported that they have held full-time employment in the field for 7.25 years on the average and nearly 17 percent went on to earn a second degree.

Another survey exploring employment and educational satisfaction will be administered in June of 2000. Graduate Data Forms are still completed by students in the semester of their graduation. These have proven to be invaluable in terms of being able to locate and contact graduates to keep them informed of immediate employment opportunities. They are also used to build the database for alumni tracking. This form of assessment will not be significantly changed or adjusted.

1993-94 ASSESSMENT
A formal system for compiling permanent addresses of graduating students was started in the Spring of 1993. Addresses in the existing database were updated, added, or changed. The new alumni newsletter, JMC Flyer, will be used to locate as many of the "lost" alumni (n = 200) as possible. An employment survey will be mailed to alumni in the Summer of 1995 along with the second edition of the JMC Flyer.

JMC graduates are now required to complete a Graduate Data Form prior to graduation and the formal alumni tracking system has been implemented.
