ASSESSMENT PLAN
All students in Family and Consumer Science complete an internship.

Teacher Education
All students seeking state certification must successfully complete 16 weeks of student teaching, PTE 400. The final grade is a pass/fail. The student must demonstrate competency aspects of teaching and classroom management in order to earn a passing grade. All student teaching site placement is done by matching student needs and site capabilities. Classroom cooperating teachers supervise, direct and critique student teachers in the classroom.

Dietetics
Dietetics majors must qualify for and complete a six month to one and one half year internship at an ADA approved internship site in the United States. ADA internships are supervised on site by the faculty/staff at the site. We receive no information and we award no credit. Internships in Dietetics are completed after graduation.  The internship experience is evaluated by a registered dietician.

Human Development and Family Relationships
In addition to internship hours, students in the Human Development and Family Relationships option also complete four credit hours of field experiences, two hours of which are on site with an on site supervisor and an on campus faculty supervisor. Sponsors for internships are typically Human Service Professionals in private practice, state social service departments, or private social welfare agencies. Sponsors are responsible for developing and directing the interns' routine of responsibilities and critique interns' strengths, weaknesses and performance.

Interior Design
The Internship is conducted as a cooperative collaboration between the Interior Design Program Director and the external sponsor. In an exit interview the Director of   the Interior Design Program asks the sponsor for an overall evaluation of student performance, the internship concept and if it meets the sponsor's expectations and needs.

1999-2000 ASSESSMENT
1998-99 ASSESSMENT
1997-98 ASSESSMENT
Teacher Education

All students successfully completed student teaching. A member of the Department visits student teachers four times during the semester. She interacts with students and the cooperating teacher. Deficiencies which are common to a number of students result in more emphasis being placed in courses before student teaching, such as more experience with teaching technology and organizing lesson plans for contingencies.

Dietetics
Evaluations are generally good. Numbers of students vary with program enrollment, ranging from 1-4 each.

Human Development and Family Relationships
Students successfully completed internships. Sponsors are asked to prepare a written evaluation of student performance including strengths, weaknesses and possible recommendation for student and program. Comments of internship sponsors are integrated into internship informational meeting before internships. Sponsor comments are also reflected in emphasis being placed in problem areas during coursework. Students report better levels of preparation and have more confidence in abilities going into internships.

Interior Design
Students are successful in being accepted for and completing paid internship experiences at the state, regional and national level. Typically between 5-10 students go on internships at one time.

1996-97 ASSESSMENT
Teacher Education
Typical problem areas involve lessening planning and developing special class projects. All students successfully completed student teaching. Students were observed to make better uses of technology than previously and exhibit more pose and confidence in using equipment in lesson planning. More emphasis has been placed in training students in instructional technology.

Dietetics
Evaluations are generally good.

Human Development and Family Relationships

Interior Design
Students are successful in being accepted for and completing paid internship experiences, being accepted for regional and national intern positions.

1993-94 ASSESSMENT

Teacher Education
All students successfully completed student teaching. Evaluations are generally good.

Human Development and Family Relationships

Dietetics
Evaluations are generally good. Currently there are only enough Diet internship sites to accommodate approximately half of the Dietetics students produced each year across the nation. Thus, only the very best students are accepted into these internships.

There are currently six internship slots per year available in Nebraska at Omaha. As a result, our Director of Dietetics is exploring the possibility of offering additional internships through Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. Over the past five to six years our internship placement of students has been quite high at 75 to 80 percent of those who apply. Of the approximately sixteen graduates our program produced between 1988 and 1994, three have taken the national exam and all have passed it. Approximately three of our more recent graduates are in internships presently. Hence our interest in becoming an approved site.

It should be noted that the number of approved internship sites is a problem the ADA is currently grappling with and only they can solve.

Other internships
Apparel Marketing: A large percentage of the Apparel Marketing Majors utilize the B&T 475 course if they are able to find a paid internship. Occasionally a student will register for the FCSC 475 in lieu of B & T 475 if they will receive no pay during the internship experience. Apparel Marketing produces four to five students per year. Evaluation of their internships have indicated no program changes at this time.

Human Development and Family Relationships option. This option produces approximately ten interns per year. Our yearly assessment has indicated a problem exists: Our internship site directors want our students to take more than a 3 cr. hr. internship so students can spend more time "on site" and derive a more in-depth experience. The college Academic Affairs Committee takes a dim view of internships and thus our committee representative has informed us that it is unlikely they will allow us to increase internship hours.

Human Development and Family Relationships
As a result we are combining our three hours of internship, FCSC 475, with our two hour field experience FCSC 480C, but this is only a stop gap and not a solution.
