The following protocols were established for use of this rubric:

  1. Each essay was identified by a number system only (keyed to student name held in a separate file);
  2. Before assessing essays, the committee used a norm referencing process to reach agreement about the expectations for each evaluated item;
  3. Two members of the committee (or, in cases of disagreement, all three members) read it and scored it independently;
  4. Final scores were calculated as an average of all scores received.
