ASSESSMENT PLAN
The capstone course in Marketing is BMKT 456 - Marketing Management.

The capstone course in Management is BMGT 495 - Administrative Strategy and Policy.

Revised 1997-1998 to include:
The capstone courses in Management Information Systems are BMIS 381 and BMIS 481--Systems Analysis and Design I, Systems Analysis and Design II.

1999-2000 ASSESSMENT
Students in BMGT 495 began taking the Major Field Test in Business in Summer 2000. The results of the Summer 2000 and Fall 2000 have been received. However, the results of the Spring 2001 and Summer 2001 have not yet been received. Overall, the Management students ranked in the 55th percentile. This ranking is based on a comparison of 388 institutions and 65,578 examinees. In part due to working towards AACSB accreditation and in part due to assessment results, we have added an International Business course as an elective in the Management emphasis and have combined the Human Resource emphasis and Business Administration emphasis into the Management emphasis.

Overall, the Marketing students ranked in the 56th percentile on the Major Field Test in Business. A team of marketing faculty reviewed a random sampling of marketing plans of student teams in BMKT 456. Positive results included group dynamics, technological skills, and use of SWOT. The faculty team suggested that teams be instructed to provide more detail in their cases with emphasis on "how" to accomplish a task and the use of secondary quantitative data. Additionally, they suggested students be instructed to provide global and ethical aspects on their cases.

Overall, the MIS students ranked in the 64th percentile on the Major Field Test in Business. Based on the comments from business people in conjunction with the cases students worked on in BMIS 481, the emphasis was changed this year. The change involved dropping COBOL II as a requirement and replacing it with an expanded choice of electives which includes special topic classes like JAVA.

1999-2000 ASSESSMENT
Graduating seniors in the BMGT 495 Policy course were requested to complete a on-line survey which included questions regarding how competent they felt of their business background and career plans. The results have not yet been tabulated.

A team of Marketing faculty is evaluating a random sampling of marketing plans developed by students in BMKT 456, Marketing Management, to determine strengths and weaknesses in the marketing background of students.

Students in BMIS 481 worked on cases for local businesses. Businesses were asked questions regarding the computer project done for them. Suggestions for improvements from businesses will be in incorporated into our classes and curriculum.

1998-99 ASSESSMENT
A faculty member used one BMGT 495 Policy class as a focus group to determine student satisfaction with their business program. Students felt that the policy course brought together the diverse contents of their areas.

Marketing faculty changed their program to incorporate BMKT 498, Marketing Topics, as an elective in the Marketing emphasis. They are working on developing a plan to assess marketing plans developed by students in the BMKT 456, Marketing Management course.

A questionnaire was not developed for use for all business cases in the department. Upon completion and presentation of the projects in BMIS 481 businesses were asked to evaluate the project. Comments were solicited on the professionalism and courtesy of the team as well as the value and completeness of the project.

1997-98 ASSESSMENT
Based on exit interviews of graduating seniors, students feel that both the policy and marketing capstone courses bring together the diverse content of their areas.

As a department, we are involved with a national organization that is developing a standardized policy test where the institution can select ten areas to be tested in a two-hour test. When this test will be available for institutional use in not known.

For the capstone systems course, a questionnaire is being developed to be given to the businesses for which students do actual systems analysis cases. As this questionnaire will be given to businesses this spring, the results are unavailable. As several other classes within our department use business cases, it is possible that the questionnaire can be extended to incorporate these classes also.

1996-97 ASSESSMENT
Based on the information from graduating senior exit interviews and the 1993-94 alumni survey, the capstone policy class is currently being team-taught, uses current cases, and incorporates technology via a simulation program. The course is more focused in tying all the functional areas of business together. Students in the capstone marketing course felt the course brought together the diverse area of marketing. Students in both capstone courses like the small classes and interaction with faculty.
1995-96 ASSESSMENT
Interviews with graduating seniors were held with a sampling of graduating seniors. In general, the students felt the capstone policy course served them well in tying most of the functional areas of business together. They felt well prepared for their careers though they did suggest that the cases used need to be more current. Students felt the capstone marketing course brought together the diverse areas of marketing, but there should be more integration of technology into their program of study. Students in both capstone courses liked the small classes and interaction with faculty. The management and marketing faculty will utilize the information from the students as curriculum is reviewed.
1994-95 ASSESSMENT
Interviews with graduating seniors were held with a sampling of graduating seniors. In general, the students felt the capstone policy course served them well in tying most of the functional areas of business together. They felt well prepared for their careers. Students felt the capstone marketing course brought together the diverse areas of marketing. Students in both capstone courses liked the small classes and interaction with faculty.
1993-94 ASSESSMENT
A survey of accredited peer schools was conducted during 1993-94 on their capstone policy course. Information from the survey is now under study to reassess the teaching methods and content of our UNK course.
